A collaborative partnership among special centers, elementary and secondary schools,
the School of Education and the School of Arts and Sciences at Bowie State University
Our mission is to create and sustain a collaborative partnership that impacts student learning via:
1. models of effective teaching and learning
2. appropriate, extensive internship experiences for prospective teachers
3. focused professional development opportunities
4. opportunities to try new approaches, and conduct site-based research.
A Professional Development School is ...
A collaborative partnership planned and implemented for the academic and clinical preparation of teacher interns and the continuous professional development of both school system and institutes of higher education (IHE) faculty. The focus of the PDS partnership is improved student performance through research-based reaching and learning. A PDS may involve a single or multiple schools, school systems and IHEs, and may take many forms to reflect specific partnership activities and approaches to improving both teacher education and PreK-12 schools. (Maryland Partnership for Teaching and Learning K-16 Superintendents and Deans Committee, 2001)
Standards for Maryland Professional Development Schools
1. Learning Community - The PDS recognizes and suppot1s the distinct learning needs of all partners (i.e.) faculty / staff, interns and students).
2. Collaboration - The PDS has a mission that is jointly defined and mutually supported by the IHE and the school.
3. Accountability - The PDS accepts the responsibility of and is held accountable for upholding professional standards for preparing and renewing teachers in accordance with the Redesign of Teacher Education.
4. Organizations, Roles & Resources -
Resources and time are allocated to support the continuous improvement of teaching and learning.
Bowie State University Professional Development School Initiatives Include:
· Teach-Coach-Reflect course to assist mentor teachers in their supervision and mentoring of year-long interns, including the development of an electronic portfolio
· Focused Professorial Development experiences in technology, literacy, mathematics and science
· Year-long Intern assessment through performance based electronic portfolio
· PDS site-based groups and action research to analyze best practices
· An annual Bowie State University PDS Research Conference
· Multi-site PDS planning including Summer Strategic Planning
· On site methods classes
· Year-long internships
