ExxonMobil Grant – We are pleased to inform you that Marlton Elementary School received a generous donation of $750 from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Program. This money will be used to enhance our technology program. Please extend a thank you to Samrish Singh, Exxon Mobil Station, 7625 Crain Highway, Upper Marlboro for submitting the grant application for our school the next time you purchase gas.
Lost and Not Found – There are many lost sweaters, lunchboxes and jackets in our lost and found. These items have been moved to a table in the school lobby for the students to examine. None of the items are labeled with the child’s name and the students do not recognize the items. Parents are asked to visit the school between 7:00 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. to find lost clothing. On 11/12/09, all lost items that have not been claimed will be sent to Goodwill. Please label the children’s clothing, lunchboxes and book bags so lost items can be returned to them quickly.
Healthy Kids Program – Our parent liaison, Donna Jackson, invites everyone to participate in the Healthy Kids Program Workshop. This program will be presented by Edible Arrangements. Those families who attend may receive free giveaways. This activity takes place on Wednesday, 11/4/09 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. prior to the Family Math Night.
Family Math Night – This year our program, entitled Building Character at Family Math Night, will continue to offer innovative and fun math activities that engage students and family in learning. Plus we will show the students how their actions and conversations during group work builds one’s character. Everyone is encouraged to join the fun on Wednesday, 11/4/09, from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Picture Day – On Wednesday, 11/4/09, class pictures will be taken. Students will wear their school uniform for their class picture. Those interested in purchasing a class picture must prepay for the picture. Information about the class picture and cost were sent home today along with this newsletter.
Individual Picture Retakes – If you were not satisfied with your child’s individual picture or your child didn’t have their picture taken, they can participate in the retake on Wednesday, 11/4/09. Your child must wear their uniform to school. However, they can bring a different shirt to school and change into the shirt for their picture retake. Afterwards, they will change back into their school uniform.
Make Up Work – It is important for the students to complete make up work after an absence. However, the teachers need time to gather the work for the students. Therefore, when you call to request make up work, the information will be sent to the teacher and the work will be ready on the following morning. Make up work will be located on the office counter. Please make sure your child completes the make up work as it prevents your child from having gaps in their learning. Thank you for understanding.
Absences – Upon returning to school from an absence, a pupil is required to bring a written note from his or her parent or guardian stating the reason for absence. The note provides the information necessary to determine if the absence was lawful or unlawful. Please make sure your child has a note whenever they return from an absence. If your child is absent less than three consecutive days a parent note is sufficient. If your child is absent more than three consecutive days a doctor’s note is required.
Marlton Spirit Wear Sale – Marlton Spirit wear, sweatshirts and T-shirts, can be ordered through the PTA. All orders are due by Nov. 11 and delivery will occur before Thanksgiving holiday. It is important to note that students are allowed to wear only a navy blue or white sweater or Marlton Sweatshirt with their uniform if they are chilly in the classroom. No other color sweaters or sweatshirts are allowed with the uniform. Sample spirit wear items will be on display at the Family Math Night on Wednesday, Nov. 4 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. If you have questions, contact Susan Lagnese 240-506-2072.
PTA Honey Baked Ham Fundraiser orders are due THIS Friday, 11/6, 2009.
Box Tops – The PTA is collecting Box Tops for Education, again this year. The Box Tops are found on many General Foods items and household goods. Please cut out the Box Tops and send them in with your child. Collection boxes will be available in each classroom. This is an easy way to earn extra money to support our school. If you have a pile already, bring them to school. If you don’t there is still plenty of time to start collecting. Thank you for your support of the Box Tops for Education program.
Nurse Notes
Mobile Dentist – The mobile dentist visited Marlton today and many students participated. Thank you for sending in your permission slips for your child to be seen by the dentist. We will arrange for the Mobile Dentist to visit Marlton again next year.
Health Fair 2010 - Marlton will have its first Health Fair on January 22, 2010. Mark your calendars and plan to attend. If you are interested in helping Sandy Bishop, the school nurse, by suggesting ideas for the fair, having a health/fitness booth at the fair, or helping to organize the fair, please call 301-952-0602 during school hours.
Lunch Debit System – Everyday, there are students that do not have money in their lunch account and are given a cheese sandwich for their meal. Parents are encouraged to keep a record of how often your child purchases lunch and/or breakfast and ice cream treats on Wednesday. Make sure you send money to school for their account before it gets depleted. Parents can pre-pay for children’s meals online two days prior when using your bank debit card, Visa, Discover or MasterCard. You are encouraged to pre-purchase meals for at least one month at a time. You can access PayPams from the County website http://www.pgcps.org/~lunch/ or PayPams directly http://www.paypams.com

As you can see from the data, our biggest area of concern was teasing and name calling. For the month of November let’s commit to watching what we say. If it doesn’t build another person up or make them feel good about themselves, it’s probably best not said. “It’s best to be thought of as a fool then to open ones mouth and remove all doubt.” Thanks to parents to helping us with this endeavor!
Parenting Matters – There will be a free MD PIRC Parenting Matters Conference: Connecting Crayons, Computers, College, and Careers on Saturday, 11/7/09, from 8:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the University of MD, Baltimore County Campus. Topics include: school readiness, gang awareness, college planning and readiness, health and healthy living, social cliques and much more. Families can go to www.mdpirc.org//conference to register. Free light breakfast, childcare (ages 2 – 5), Youth Track (ages 6 – 14), interpretation, door prizes, lunch will be provided.
