Introduction:  I am the Health Services staff  in the health room of Langley Park McCormick Elementary School. I have been working as a professional School nurse since 2005. My background and continued work experience is Medical Surgical and Psychiatric Nursing. I have also worked as a banker, economist, and financial analyst before commencing and graduating from the nursing program of Marymount University, Arlington VA in 1999.

Health Room Services:  The professional school nurse, according to the Nurse Practice Act, is an independent practice arena where the Maryland State licensed nurse is responsible for the health and well being of the student population.

1. The health room is not a full fledged clinic, hospital or acute care setting. It is mostly a first aid center and a mini public health office.

2. I evaluate health data and information provided by parents and guardians about the student's immunizations, and medical conditions

in accordance to the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Maryland Board of Nursing and the Health Department standards.

 3. I promote, prevent and control the transmission of communicable diseases by adhering to laid down communicable disease summary and guidelines.

 4. I develop, offer and guide students/ families to appropriate community providers of mental health, medicine, nursing, rehabilitation and other allied services.

 5. I develop, monitor, review and interpret Health care plans for students with special health needs.

 6. I give medications with proper authorizations and documentation from the primary care providers to students if those medications must be taken during the hours of being present at the school.

 7. I provide health care screenings in the form of Vision/Hearing, BP, Height and Weights and other health screenings to advise on outcomes that would improve the overall health of the school population.

 8. I provide health counseling, crisis intervention, child abuse / neglect monitoring and reporting to ensure that we have a stable and healthy emotional, mental and physical environment.

 9. I provide regulating bodies with daily, weekly, monthly and yearly write ups and statistical reports on all health activities of the students in the school.

 10. The presence of a health room manned by a licensed professional nurse within the school helps to decrease absenteeism from school by students for reasons that could be minor or trivial.

Please feel free to call or speak with me during your visit to the school. Just ask for “Nurse Addie".

Take of your self and your children. As I always say, "Health is wealth".
