English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Program
The ESOL Team (Teachers of English as a Second Language) are eager to welcome your children as they begin their studies in a new country. Their mission is to provide language rich experiences so your children can learn English as fast as possible in order to be successful in their studies.
The ESOL Team is Chaired by Susan M. Toerge MA. Last year, Ms. Toerge was a semi-finalist for Teacher of the Year in Prince Georges County. She is a Fulbright Teacher Scholar and knows the struggles of studying in a second language as a University student in Heidelberg, Germany. Ms. Toerge teaches 4th, 5th and 6th Graders.
Miraida Strauber PhD. comes to us from Russia, where she studied English and taught at the University of Moscow. Dr. Strauber enjoys teaching Kindergarten and 1st Graders.
Stephen Corbett MA. visits South America regularly with his Brazilian wife and family. He speaks Portuguese and Spanish and will be teaching 2nd and 3rd Grade this year. His daughter is now studying in Brazil.
Arlene Cohen MA. enjoys travel to Israel to visit her daughter and new grandchild. She is looking forward to teaching 1st and 2nd Grade this year. Ms. Cohen will chair the Reading Together program this year.
Beverly Raynor MA. Has a background in theater and employs this in her teaching of English. She teaches a self-contain class of 4th, 5th and 6th Graders.
This month Ms. Cohen and Ms. Toerge will be recruiting 5th and 6th graders to tutor 2nd graders in reading. The tutors can earn community service credit, which can be applied to their Middle School service. Tutoring will take place Wednesdays and Thursdays after school. Permission forms will be send home for parent signatures in the next week. Also, at this time the 2nd graders will be using our new Imagine Learning English computer program before the tutoring begins.
Imagine Learning English has hundreds of activities for English learners. This innovative, easy-to-use program provides an adaptive curriculum, strategic first-language support, computer-delivered assessments, detailed reports, and much more. WE have found that your students enjoy the interactive activities.
Also, ELL (English language Learners) accommodation forms will be send home for parent signatures. These forms explain how your child will be accommodated for all tests at Langley Park McCormick ES.
