6th Grade
John Malter
Background – This is Mr. Malter’s sixth year teaching Reading/Language Arts and Social Studies at Langley Park-McCormick Elementary School.
Academics for the Quarter – Mr. Malter’s classes will be tackling a variety of subjects in the first quarter. In Reading/Language Arts, there will be introductions to Reader’s Workshop and Writer’s Workshop, which will include both reading and composing in the narrative genre. In Social Studies, the students will be developing the fundamentals of geography, including the physical, human, cultural, and environmental aspects of the subject.
Brian Bertges
Background: Mr. Bertges is the 6th grade Math & Science teacher. He is a veteran of the United States Army and went to college at Penn State (We Are...Penn State!). He graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Biobehavioral Health. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and has lived in 11 different states including Hawaii.
Quarter in a snapshot:
By the end of the quarter your student should have mastered charts & graphs, central tendencies, and operations dealing with whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers. They should also be working on their Science Fair Projects and their math project for the quarter, which deals with converting decimals into percents and fractions (and vice versa). In science they will have completed both technology and the nature of science as well as environmental science.
Upcoming Events
The 6th Grade will be going on field trips to NorthBay in November, and the National Gallery of Art for an exhibit on Pompeii in December.
