GREETINGS FROM

“THE UNSTOPPABLE FIFTH GRADERS”

5TH grade math students will be busy this quarter!  Our goal is to know our multiplication facts (0-12) in less than 3 minutes!  It is so important that the students know their multiplication tables as we rely on this knowledge so much during the year.  We will focus this quarter on multiplication and division, plane figures, quadrilaterals, transformations, area, perimeter, and finally elapsed time.  Every week, we will practice writing a BCR in order to prepare us for our MSA Math Challenge next year!  We appreciate any help you can give us to make your child successful in math.

In science, 5th graders will be focusing on the following topics: classifying organisms, cells to systems, plants, as well as interactions and changes in ecosystems.  We will go to Camp Schmidt on October 27th and October 28th.

This is a required part of our 5th grade science curriculum.  Please return your child’s permission slip on time.  Plus, we would love to have parents come with us.

In reading and language arts, we have been learning about nature’s fury.  Here, we discuss hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes and much more.  It will be quite an adventure.  Then we move to tall tales and discussing a new genre.  We will be looking at how tall tales came to be, and what we can learn from them.  We will have the opportunity to write one of our own.    Please remember that students need to read every evening and signed reading logs are due each week

In social studies, we are familiarizing ourselves with how to read a map.  We are also discussing the ancient peoples of the Americas.  Some of these groups are our student’s ancestors which makes it particularly interesting.  We are having a great adventure learning and discovering new ideas and cultures.

Please feel free to contact either Ms. Blackmore or Mr. Murdock if you want to set up a conference to discuss your child’s progress in school.
