3rd Grade
Welcome to Third Grade!
The third grade teachers this year are Ms.Kent and Ms.Martinez. Ms.Kent teaches math, science and health. Ms. Martinez teaches Language Arts and Social Studies. The third grade is departmentalized so the students begin each day in their home room subject and change classes mid-morning.
Our theme for the year is ‘Believe you can achieve’. With the ‘I can do it attitude’ the students feel empowered to do the hard work necessary in order to learn the challenging third grade content.
In Math this year the students will be working in pairs and small groups in order to investigate some new concepts such as: place value, geometry, counting money, measurement, and regrouping for multi-digit addition and subtraction. Toward the end of the year the students will be introduced to multiplication and division concepts.
In Language Arts this year students will be working their hardest to use the reading strategies and skills that they are being taught so that they can fully understand what they are reading. This is critical for the high level thinking that they will be asked to do as they participate in classroom discussions, answer high level thinking test questions and encounter content specific material in Social Studies and Science.
The students will also be learning about the world around them. In Science they will learn to observe and describe what they see in their world. In Social Studies they will be learning about communities around the world and how the people in them are affected by their surroundings. They will also learn to use the features of text in order to gain a better understanding of their world and to create projects that will develop their thinking and extend their knowledge base.
Ms.Kent and Ms. Martinez are excited to be working with such an eager and excited group of third graders. Each student brings a wealth of knowledge into the classroom that when shared and added to the learning environment, makes for an extremely successful outcome.
