First Grade: Keeping In Touch
Our First Grade teachers are Ms.Hopkins, Ms. Dauod, Ms. Gallo, and Ms.Samantha Bustamante. We want your child to succeed in school and in life! We hope to meet all of our students parents soon.
Our Students are learning to read for different purposes: literary experiences, (e.g., stories, plays, poems) and to be informed, (e.g., articles and directions). Please ask your children to retell the stories they read with you. They love to read and you are their favorite audience.
In Health, we are focusing on recognizing what angry feelings are in order to build strategies for handling anger in a nondestructive manner. Some of our student’s favorite strategies are to pound clay, draw their anger away, and blow their anger out in balloons and paper bags.
Learning the meaning of four national symbols and explaining the symbols to each other was part of a recent Social Studies Unit. Ask you child about The American Flag, The Bald Eagle, The Liberty Bell, or The Statue of Liberty. They have learned a lot and are eager to share their new information with you.
In Mathematics we use manipulative to compare and order the number of objects in sets, develop strategies to master addition and subtraction facts, and write and solve number sentences for story problems involving addition and subtraction. Learning the basics facts starts now. Your child has weekly math quizzes. We want to see your child progress and learn these basic math strategies before second grade. Please spend at least 5 minutes every night having your child review and study addition and subtraction fact cards.
In science we used many hands-on experiences to learn the differences between living and non-living things. We are now exploring plant and animal habitats. Your child will be learning about the plants and animals that live in the forest, the wetlands, the oceans, and the deserts of the world.
Please call the school and set up an appointment to meet with us. We would love to have the opportunity to talk with you about the progress your child is making.
