Sixth Grade Math
The sixth grade math curriculum has been updated. We are now using last years seventh grade math books and incorporating sixh grade skills and concepts. Therefore, the math curriculum will be rigorous and intense. Within the past two weeks the students have been taught Problem Solving, Order of Operations, Evaluating Numeric Expressions and Prime Factorization. During the next few weeks our focus will be Organizng and Displaying Data. Students are expected to create frequency tables, stem-and-leaf plots, bar graphs and circle graphs. The students will also read, analyze and interpret the graphs. We encouraging the parents to sit with the students to discuss what the students have learned and to assist them when needed. Students can find additional help through the website, www.msmath2.net/extra_examples.
6th Grade Geography: World Studies
In Geography, for the month of October, we will be studying five themes: Location, place, region, movement, and human-environment interaction. These are the ways in which we study Earth. Students will become familiar with the different parts of a map and/or globe and be expected to label them without using a resource. Near the end of Unit 1, students will have a project in which they create their own island, incorporating all they have learned through out the unit.
6th Grade Science
In Science, for the month of October, we will cover the skills and attitudes important to being a great scientist. We will also explore scientific inquiry. We will do this in terms of the science fair projects due December 15th of this year. I want to get the students thinking about questions they may have that can be answered through the scientific method. Near the end of September we will discuss more extensively their projects and research papers.
