The mission of Lamont Elementary School is to provide a quality education to all students and ensure that all students develop the skills and acquire the knowledge necessary to become lifelong learners and productive citizens.

SCHOOL DEMOGRAPHICS

Population

Lamont is a diverse school. Currently, our student population is composed of  47% Hispanic, 47% African-American, 2% White, and 4% Asian students. 53% of our students are male and 47% are female.

Grades Lamont serves students in  grades Pre-kindergarten through 6th grade.
Mobility Rate Lamont has a mobility rate of 17%.
ESOL Students  Lamont ESOL students represent 49% of the school's population.
 
 
 

SCHOOL DAY / DIA ESCOLAR

OFFICE HOURS: 7:00 a.m - 3:00 p.m.

The school day for students begins at 7:45 am and ends at 1:55 pm. If a student is late, he/she should report to the office, sign in, and receive a late slip.  Students who walk or carpool to school should arrive at 7:15 am for breakfast.  Students should not arrive before 7:15 am.

El día escolar para los estudiantes empieza a las 7:45 am y finaliza a la 1:55 pm. Si un estudiante llega tarde, él/ella debe reportarse y registrarse en la oficina, y recibir un pase por llegada tarde.  Los estudiantes que caminan o son traídos en auto a la escuela, deben llegar a las 7:15 am para su desayuno. Los estudiantes no deben llegar antes de las 7:15 am.

Breakfast and Lunch / Desayunos y Almuerzos

The school cafeteria operates under the National School lunch Program Act that provides funds to assist in the operation of a non-profit school lunch program.  Menus are sent home a the beginning of each month.  The first week of school every child will be given a Free/Reduced Meals Application.  This application must be filled out and returned to school.  The application is then processed to determine if the family income meets the requirements to qualify to receive free or reduce breakfast and lunch

La cafetería de la escuela opera bajo el Programa del Decreto de Almuerzos Escolares Nacionales que provee fondos para asistir en la operación del programa de almuerzos escolares sin fines de lucro.  Los Menús serán enviados a casa al principio de cada mes.  La primera semana de escuela, cada niño/a recibirá una Aplicación para poder recibir comida Gratis/Reducida.  Esta aplicación debe ser completada y devuelta a la escuela.  La aplicación será después procesada para determinar si el ingreso familiar reúne los requerimientos para calificar y recibir desayuno y almuerzo gratis o a precio reducido.

Special Events

Back to School Night

Parents are invited to Back-to-School Night to meet the teachers and staff for the 2009-2010 school.

   Pre-K through Grade 2: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 from 6:45-8:00. 

Grades 3-6: Wednesday September 16, 2009 from 6:45-8:00.

Multicultural Celebrations

Lamont Family Heritage Celebration

     Our 3rd  Annual Lamont Family Heritage Festival will include school-wide recognition of the heritage of the more than 40 countries represented by our students and staff. Classroom doors will be decorated with information about countries, morning announcements will feature a country a day with a word/phrase in that native language, a hall of nations display of flags from around the Lamont world. A Continental Map bulletin board will be created marking the location of the countries.  Parents will be invited to partner with their child’s teacher in displaying and teaching of the culture of their heritage during the school day.

Native American Indian Heritage Month

     Lamont students will learn of the many contributions of the first Americans, the Native American Indians through morning announcements, hall and bulletin board displays and a guest speaker from a local Indian tribe of Maryland. Focus will be placed on Maryland Native American Indians: the Nanticoke (Piscataway, Convoy), Powhatan (Accohannock) and Susquehannock tribes.

 

STEM Fair

Lamont's STEM (Sceince, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Fair will be held on December 14th through the 18th, 2009. This is a mandatory project assignment for all students in the intermediate grades (3rd through 6th). The primary grades and CRI will be doing class projects. 
 
Here are the scheduled dates for all STEM assignments:
 
October     1: Students should be gathering materials and beginning to run their field testing.
 
November  6: All data should be collected and construction of graphs, charts and diagrams should begin
               20: Reserach report must be turned in for teacher review and graded
               23: Begin to design and set up your science board and begin oral report presentation
 
December  2: Oral reports are given in the classroom and graded
                11: Projects may begin arriving at school
                14: Last day for all projects and no later than 3:00 PM NO EXCEPTIONS
                17: Judging will take place and winners to be announced
                     Open House for STEM Projects a time will be determined at a later date
                18: Projects will be sent home except for our top four (4) winners

Family Reading Night

We encourage our students to become lifelong readers at Lamont Elementary School.  Reading Night at Lamont is organized to involve parents and children in the JOYS of reading.Through the use of literacy games and activities, children are able to reinforce the skills necessary to become proficient readers.  Consequently, parents become aware of the various literacy activities to support their children at home in reading.  Finally, our students will become successful readers through the necessary interaction of parents, students, and teachers.
