Principal's Message

Ms. Tonya Riggins, Principal

Ms Riggins 2Greetings Lake Arbor Families and Friends,

As the principal, it is with great pleasure that I serve as the istructional leader of this extraordinary school.  This is my second year as principal and I have observed that the Lake Arbor Community is very closely knit, having high expectation of the school.  I recognize this charge and I assure you, my expectations are the same.  It is my belief that all students are capable and should show significant gains regardless of the academic levels previously acquired.  We will continue to achieve academic rigor by focusing on Dr. Hite’s, Superintendent, five core beliefs:

  • High Student Achievement
  •  Highly Effective Teaching
  •  Safe and Supportive Schools
  • Strong Community Partnerships

Together, I know that we are able and will increase student achievement. Our teachers are competent, our community is caring and our students are committed to the goals they have before them.

Last year, our students took the 2011 Maryland School Assessment (MSA) and met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for all students, scoring 84.1 % in reading and 80.3 % in math.  However, we did not meet AYP for all subgroups. Special Education scored 54.8% in reading and 45.2% in math; Free and Reduced-Priced Meals Students (FARMS) scored 73.4%  in math.  To make AYP, schools must meet the Annual Measurable Objective (AMO) in reading and mathematics for ALL students and for each subgroup.

Therefore, we did not make AYP.  The Annual Measurable Objective (AMO) for 2012 in reading is 90.7% and math it is 88.8%.  I am very determined and confident that with hard work, and support from our community,   we will meet our target.

Parents please know that we are dedicated to educating children at high levels and you play a key role in your child’s academic success.  Please continue to assist your child with sending them to school daily and on time, homework/projects, and communicate with the school staff when you have concerns.

We look forward to continued success.  We are Lake Arbor Elementary-
