• Principal's Message

Greetings Lake Arbor Families and Friends,

Hello and welcome to Lake Arbor Elementary. Lake Arbor Elementary has been in existence since 2002. Our goal is very simple: we want to create a dynamic learning environment where our students can learn and grow. It is my belief that all students are capable and should show significant gains regardless of the academic levels previously acquired. We will continue to increase student achievement by focusing on:

    • High Student Achievement
    • Highly Effective Teaching
    • Safe and Supportive Schools
    • Efficient and Effective Operations
    • Strong Community Partnerships.

Our school services approximately 600 students and families. Our goal is to develop positive home-school relationships and continue to build community partnerships. Our door is always open. It is very important for you to know what your child is learning. So, I encourage parents to visit the SchoolMax Family Portal (https://family.sis.pgcps.org) to keep abreast of your child’s assignments, grades and attendance. It is my hope that parents and community partners will stay involved by visiting our website, attending school events, and volunteering. Together, I know that we are able to prepare our students to be productive citizens and become college and career ready.

We will continue to ensure a safe and secure environment by requiring all visitors to sign in and receive a visitors’ pass and asking parents to notify the teacher before visiting classrooms. This year, thanks to the Governor of Maryland’s Security Initiative, all schools will be equipped with surveillance cameras, electronic entry, and panic buttons.

Our teachers continue to be caring and competent; 97% are “Highly Qualified” by Maryland State Standards. This means they demonstrate a high level of competency in each of the core academic subjects in which they teach. They also hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, and a valid Standard or Advanced Professional Certificate.

We have fully implemented the Common Core State Standards, along with forty-five other states. These Standards were created to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. They are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need to be college/career ready and compete successfully in the global economy. The new Standards will be assessed by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). This assessment will allow students and parents to know if they are on track to graduate ready for college and careers. Please visit http://www.parcconline.org/samples/item-task-prototypes for sample test items. To learn more about PARCC and Common Core you can visit PGCPS common core website at: https://sites.google.com/a/pgcps.org/common-core-parent-portal/home/assessment.

Parents, please know that we are dedicated to educating children at high levels and you play a key role in your child’s academic success. Please continue to assist in this quest by sending them to school daily and on time, assisting with homework/projects, and communicating with the school staff when you have concerns.

I hope you find this website useful as we continue to improve our ability to communicate with you. We will update the website on an ongoing basis. If you have any questions in the interim, please give us a call at 301.808-5940. Once again, I am humble by the opportunity to serve you. We look forward to continued success.
