Judy Center Summer Enrichment Program

Language,Literacy and Mathematics Program

2009

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Judy Center Summer Enrichment Program offers students support and enrichment by focusing on language and literacy skills that include hands on learning and parent involvement.  The Language, Literacy  and Mathematics Program is held Monday through Thursday from 9:00a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Cool Spring Elementary for five weeks.  Classes run from the end of June through the end of July.  The program was fully enrolled with 115 students attending each day. The program was staffed by the Judy Center Program Manager, Judy Center Service Coordinator, seven certified Early Childhood teachers and seven paraprofessionals

Students attending the summer program were three to five-years of age and were enrolled in Pre-K, Head Start, or Kindergarten, and live within the Adelphi and Cool Spring boundaries as well as Pre-kindergarten and Head Start students from Frances Fuch Early Childhood Center.  There is no cost to the students that participate in our summer program.  All students receive free breakfast and lunch.  Transportation was provided for students from Cool Spring and Adelphi Elementary Schools that rode the bus during the school year.

The Lakeshore Emergent Reading Kit is the curriculum used for the summer program.  Teachers follow a modified Pre-K and Kindergarten Daily Planner format.  Three Read-A-Loud opportunities are built into each day.  All classrooms administer Pre and Post Assessments.   Pre-K classes use Letter Identification and Book and Print Awareness Check List.  Kindergarten uses Letter Identification and the Emergent Reading Behavior Inventory.

All teachers attend two days of Professional Development prior to the onset of the program.  Parents who are enrolled in the Even Start Adult Literacy program spend one hour each Thursday in their child’s classroom.
