    New Beginnings

Dear James McHenry Elementary School Families:

Principal PictureMy name is Harold McCray, Jr. and I am so excited to introduce myself as the new principal of James McHenry Elementary School. I am extremely honored to serve as the instructional leader of this awesome community. I have been dedicated to the field of education and Prince George’s County Public Schools for over thirteen years. During this time, I have taught elementary and secondary grade levels, served as an Instructional Lead Teacher, in addition to working in central office as a Elementary Math Resource Teacher and Peer Assistance and Review Coach. I also was an elementary school Assistant Principal, and recently a high school Resident Principal. Through all of my experiences my goal has always remain constant, and that is for every student to receive a high quality education that will prepare them to excel in society.

I am excited to begin what promises to be the best school year ever. This school year will be one of building and fostering strong relationships with the learning community, as well as being focused on academic student achievement for all learners. As the principal, it is important to me that everyone who walks through our doors feels safe, supported, and excited about being there. With this type of attitude it enables us to meet the needs of all scholars, and challenges of academic rigor in a positive, fun, and nurturing way. It is my top priority that the environment is conducive for high quality instruction, while providing enriching experiences for our scholars. Some of my goals include interacting and learning with your children, providing and monitoring an intentional focus on rigorous instruction, and celebrating the many achievements of James McHenry Elementary School. It is extremely important to me that I provide a safe and supportive environment while instilling the importance of having pride in getting a quality education.

Being the new principal presents opportunities for various beginnings. However, newness alone cannot produce transformation. We must be willing to collaborate and make decisions that will always be in the best interest of our scholars. I encourage all parents to be involved and to join our Parent Teacher Organization (P.T.O.). Parents, know that the expectations are high and that the instructional program will be rigorous and challenging, yet rewarding. Our instructional program will be far more effective with your active participation. Please send your children to us well rested, on-time, future focused, equipped with the proper materials and encouraged. We, in-turn will send them home to you prepared to meet the demands of society and with the skills necessary to achieve in colleges and careers. Your presence is not only welcomed, but it is greatly needed!

It is my belief that each and every child brings something unique to this world. With the right care, stimulating atmosphere, engaging instruction that meets their needs of learning, all children can and will excel. Ultimately, when we ALL work together as a learning community and operate with our students' best interest as the focus, achievement will always be the result. I look forward to collaborating with you as we demonstrate to society what it means to have Cougar Pride!

    Dr. Harold A. McCray, Jr.
