The Speech /Language Pathologist (SLP) is an integral part of the transdiciplinary team at James E. Duckworth School, where a total communication approach is utilized throughout the school day. Picture Communication Symbols (PCS), sign language (Signed English) and alternative/augmentative communication devices are used with the majority of our students who exhibit severe speech and language delays.
Using PCS, the SLP adapts books and related curriculum material, and provides a variety of materials (such as daily schedules and other visual supports) to the teachers and staff. The SLP consults with the teachers, paraprofessionals, parents and school staff regarding all facets of each student’s communication needs, in addition to providing individual and group therapy.
As the majority of our students are nonverbal, alternative/augmentative communication is a large part of our program. Each student is assessed and therapy provided, as needed, in the use of augmentative communication along with receptive and expressive language skills (verbal and nonverbal).
