Implementation Briefs

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)

AVID is a nationally recognized program that elevates student achievement by promoting their skills in reading, writing, inquiry, and collaboration. In PGCPS, we will begin our work with AVID at the middle school level.

America’s Choice

America’s Choice provides a research proven- curriculum designed to accelerate student learning, and to promote the achievement of all children. The program will be fully implemented in 22 elementary and 11 middle schools in 2007-08. Six additional middle schools and 16 high schools will use elements of the program to support students.

Financial Incentives for Supervisors and Teachers (FIRST)

PGCPS was awarded a $17.1 million grant from the federal government for the development of a performance pay plan. Over this year, planning for implementation will occur.

The Framework for Teaching (FFT)

The Framework for Teaching is a tool that identifies, names, and describes the complex activities that teachers engage in every day. It will become the basis of our new standards-based evaluation system for teachers participating in FIRST.

High School Assessment Support

Under Maryland law, students graduating in 2009 and beyond must pass the High School Assessments in English, Algebra, Biology, and American Government. As students prepare to meet this challenge, PGCPS is ready with a myriad of supports to ensure their success.

High School Consortium

In 2006-07, the High School Consortium was created to focus attention across PGCPS on the needs of our high schools. The Consortium unites all of PGCPS in supporting the efforts of our high schools to improve instruction, and support students, staff, and families.

The Institute for Learning (IFL)

The Institute for Learning provides professional development service to PGCPS around the Nine Principles of Learning. Principals of all school levels have begun their training to support the common features of an effort-based achievement system.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is a highly regarded program of study that prepares students well for the rigors of college. This year, PGCPS will expand its high school program, and some middle schools will begin planning for implementation of the Middle Years Program in 2008-09.

P-Teams

In 2006-07, the Board of Education authorized PGCPS to increase staffing of Parent Liaisons and Pupil Personnel Workers. These professionals join with other support personnel to coordinate services for students, families and schools.

Performance Management

PGCPS is undertaking a systemic performance management project designed to align multiple initiatives in achieving our core goals. Performance Management entails focusing the efforts of all individuals, departments, and schools for the achievement of our shared goals.

Small Learning Communities

Across the nation, there has been a movement towards smaller high schools, or programming within high schools to increase student achievement. In 2007-08, 16 high schools will be launching such initiatives across PGCPS.

Effective Use of Data to Improve Instruction

PGCPS has hired data coaches for each middle school. Also, PGCPS has invested in Performance Matters, a technology tool that allows the PGCPS community to access multiple forms of data. The ability of staff to gather, present, and evaluate data easily through Performance Matters will facilitate effective data-driven decision making.
