Washington Redskins - PGCPS Announce Business Partnership

The Washington Redskins and Prince George’s County Public Schools announced the establishment of a formal partnership which adds eight high school football fields to the team’s successful Fields for Tomorrow field maintenance program.

The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and Prince George’s County Public Schools unveiled the partnership at a special pep rally press conference on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 1:00 pm at Surrattsville High School (6101 Garden Drive, Clinton, MD).

Through this partnership, the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation has committed to adding the weekly maintenance of eight PGCPS football fields to the Fields for Tomorrow program (Flowers, Crossland, Wise, Potomac, Parkdale, Suitland, Surrattsville, and Forestville Military Academy). In addition, the Foundation will install the Coaches in the Classroom program and an Academic Coach at Fairmont Heights High School.

Under the Fields for Tomorrow program, the Redskins in consultation with a professional grounds crew renovate and maintain high school fields in the greater DC area. The team has dedicated nearly $1 million to the program since its inception. Schools already in the program include: Central, Fairmont Heights, Frederick Douglass, and Largo High Schools.

In addition to the eight new fields to the Fields for Tomorrow program and an Academic Coach at Fairmont Heights High School, the partnership outlines the commitment of the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation to continue a number of signature programs within the school system including Coaches in the Classroom, Fields for Tomorrow, Redskins Read, 4 th & Life High School Football Forums, Atlas & Athena, Harvest Feast, and Skins Santa Shoppe.

Under the Coaches in the Classroom program, the Redskins fund an Academic Coach that provides academic and life skills counseling to student-athletes through one-on-one mentoring, study halls, college field trips, and community service programs. The successful program is currently in place at Central High School.

With 100 yards of manicured grass as the backdrop, the entire Surrattsville High School student body including the band, football team, cheerleaders, and drill team along with several school and community leaders will accompany Redskins team officials, Redskins players, and Prince George’s County Public School officials for this momentous event, which will also include remarks by two student-athletes that have directly benefitted from these programs.

The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation, the nonprofit philanthropic arm of the team combines the influence and popularity of the Washington Redskins with the resources and assets of Washington area corporations. Founded by Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder, the Charitable Foundation is guided by its Leadership Council that consists of CEOs who help shape and define the philanthropic efforts of the Redskins to achieve a measurable impact on youth development in the areas of education, community outreach, and health and wellness.
