Maryland Meals for Achievement
Our school was selected to participate in the Maryland Meals for Achievement classroom breakfast program. As part of this project, all children at our school have the opportunity to enjoy a nutritious breakfast in their classroom each morning at no charge. A few of the benefits of this program are quieter mornings, improved attention, fewer hunger complaints, decline in tardiness, and improved academic achievement.
Broadcasting Club
The Broadcasting Club is a program where students run a live morning announcement program via the in-school cable system. Students run the entire program, including anchoring, camera people, audio technicians, and computer graphics. Ms. Reilly is the sponsor.
School Store
We have a school store that is run by the students. A variety of school supplies are available from pencils and notebooks to pencil sharpeners and gel pens. The prices are very reasonable and most times are the same or less than the items can be purchased for at a discount store. The store is open Monday - Thursday from 7:35 - 7:55. Ms. Hryczaniuk is the advisor.
Music Program
We have an active music program that encourages performance in all aspects of the performing arts at all grade levels. Our Chorus is comprised of auditioned 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. They are part of a winter and a spring concert. We also have dance groups, and percussion ensembles.
Weather Related Closings
PGCPS announces weather-related closings, delayed openings, and early dismissals in several ways:
• The school system’s Web site (www.pgcps.org) and cable television stations (Channel 96 for Comcast subscribers and Channel 38 on Verizon) are updated as soon as those decisions are made;
• Local television and radio stations, and newspapers are notified;
• The public can call 301-952-6000 and select option 1 (Bulletin Board) to hear weather-related announcements;
• The Web site www.schoolsout.com is contacted to e-mail its subscribers of the change in schedules; and
• PGCPS sends e-mail messages directly to all employees.
We urge parents and guardians to discuss specific plans with children in advance of the next weather event that alters the normal school day and transportation schedule. Each child needs to know what to do in case of school cancellations, delays, and early dismissals. Also, parents and guardians can help children and assist schools by making sure students are dressed appropriately for winter weather.
Board of Education Systems Oversight Policy
New Policy Communicates Roles and Responsibilities
The Prince George’s County Board of Education adopted a “Systems Oversight”policy during its Board meeting. The new policy establishes a formal direction for monitoring all major operations throughout Prince George's County Public Schools. By unanimous vote in favor of the policy, the Board of Education also clarified the roles of the Board and the Superintendent.
“The Board of Education is committed to its mission of advancing the achievement of its diverse student body through community engagement, sound policy governance, accountability, and fiscal management,” said Board Chair Verjeana M. Jacobs, Esq. “The oversight policy communicates to the public how the Board and the Superintendent work together to achieve our mission.”
“Systems oversight” is the role of the Board of Education in its review of the performance of all operations throughout the school system. The review will be through formal reports, audits and all reporting methods deemed appropriate by the Board through the Superintendent. Systems oversight will include reporting on goals, balanced score card measures, value added, and level of service provided.
The areas covered include, but are not limited to: Finance, Human Resources, Operations and Supporting Services, and Information Systems.
Systems oversight by the Board of Education will occur through regularly scheduled System Oversight meetings as outlined in policy 0120. The results of System Oversight meetings will be used in the Superintendent’s goal setting and evaluation, in compliance with Board Policy 8265 on Superintendent evaluation.
Board of Education Members and the Superintendent understand that systemsoversight is the responsibility of the Board of Education, as a whole, and not that of individual Board Members. All Board policies can be accessed online at http://www.pgcps.org/~Board/policy/.
