Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) serve as an important path to higher education for African American youth. The 2008 Maryland State Report Card indicates that 74% of students in PGCPS are African American. The Office of Higher Education Partnership in collaboration with other departments and offices is working to increase access to higher education for our students and provide opportunity for teacher interns within HBCU’s to experience teaching in PGCPS.
In Fulfilling the Covenant―The Way Forward, the report of the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, strongly reinforces the importance of the role played by HBCU’s and recommends increased federal support for HBCU’s. PGCPS views HBCU’s as playing an essential role for many of our youth and endorses increasing our partnerships with those Institutions of Higher Education.
