         On Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016, Maryland Governor Lawrence Hogan appointed Rachel Allen to the State Board of Cosmetologists. The Board is comprised of seven members who govern and regulate all cosmetology students, licensed cosmetologists, hair salons, nail salons, cosmetology schools and cosmetology teachers in the State of Maryland. This historic appointment makes Ms. Allen the first public high school cosmetology teacher in Prince George’s County to ever be appointed to this board since its inception in 1935.

         With a remarkable 32-year career in the beauty industry, Ms. Allen brings to the Board her expansive and celebrated background in cosmetology, business and education. Ms. Allen has been a cosmetology teacher in Prince George’s County Public Schools since 1989, where she has significantly improved the Maryland State licensing exam pass rate for her cosmetology students. She is presently the Consumer Services, Hospitality and Tourism Academy Coordinator at Gwynn Park High School, located in Brandywine, Maryland under the leadership of Dr. Tracie Miller.  

         Ms. Allen is a passionate educator, a remarkable leader and a champion for academic and career achievement for her students and staff. She has a heart for service, and has devoted this next phase of her career to advancing the cosmetology education program for the State of Maryland.
