Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the start of a new school year. Whether you are a returning Francis T. Evans Elementary School family, or new to the Francis T. Evans family, we welcome you. As the school hall floors take on their shine, and boxes arrive with new educational materials, and phone calls increase with questions about the first day of school, I know that it won’t be long before the doors open wide and we’re off to another year of teaching and learning. So, welcome back to school!
Our achievement levels in reading and in math continue to increase, and the entire Francis T. Evans Elementary School staff is looking forward to another school year of continuous academic improvement. Our students will continue to be challenged with rigorous reading and mathematics instructional programs that are directly aligned with both the Maryland Content Standards, and the Voluntary State Curriculum. We believe that the student who knows that his/her parents/guardians are interested in and supportive of the instructional program will also enjoy greater academic and overall developmental success. We value the principle that open communication among parents, students, and teachers is the key in promoting successful schools. We must work together to enable students to thrive and achieve at their highest levels.
The mission of Francis T. Evans Elementary is to develop the intellectual, social, and physical potential of each student in a nurturing learning environment and to ensure that all students master the essential components of the curriculum, acquire knowledge, and develop skills that will enable them to become successful, strong, effective leaders in their communities.
The First Day of School For All Students Is
Monday, August 24, 2009
School Hours: 7:45 a.m. – 1:55 p.m.
A Few Important Reminders
We ask you, parents, to review the following with your child(ren): Students are to
- Come to school on time, daily, in uniform and ready to work (with necessary supplies, homework, etc.)
- Respect all staff; disrespect will not be tolerated.
- Listen to and follow all directions
- Leave chewing gum, candy, toys, and electronics at home
- Do their best everyday
On the First Day Of School
When children arrive at school, they will be given color-coded tags as they get off the buses. Teachers will use these tags to create bus lists and the correct ridership for each bus. If your child will be a bus rider, it will be important that your child rides the bus to school on the first day. Talk with your child(ren) to stress that should they EVER find themselves on the wrong bus, particularly in the afternoon, they are to REMAIN on the bus and the driver will either drive them to their home or return them to the school.
Room Assignments
Room assignments will be posted inside the building on the hallway walls the first day of school. Please be aware that during the early part of the school year, it is normal for some changes to be made in room assignments. Classroom assignments are based on student need rather than on preferences for a particular teacher.
Tentatively your child has been placed in the following room:
Grade ___________ Room__________
Please find enclosed a “Room Assignment Reminder” notice. Please complete this notice. Your child should bring the completed notice with him/her on the first day of school. Parent volunteers will use the information on this notice as they help escort or direct students to the correct room assignment.
Lunch
The cost of school lunch is $2.00 including milk. A la carte milk is $.50. The breakfast price at elementary school is $1.25. A computerized meal program is in operation at Francis T. Evans. Each student
has/will have a 4-digit personal identification number (PIN#) in order to access his/her school account.
Pre-payments should be made to the student’s account by cash or check payable to Food and Nutrition Services. The account allows for pre-payments up to $99.99. Parents/Guardians should place money for meals in a sealed envelope with the following information printed on the outside: student’s name; amount enclosed; and the teacher’s name.
This year parents will be able to access, monitor, and pay directly into their child’s lunch account online, at “Pay-Pam” at the www.pgcps.org website. The monthly school menu will also be available online.
If a child forgets his/her lunch money, alternative procedures to provide for the student without lunch money have been established. Students who have lost or forgotten their lunch money will be served a cheese sandwich at no charge. If students would like to also get milk, the principal’s loan account would be debited $.50 for milk.
Bus Information
A student is to ride the bus to which he/she is assigned. The Transportation Department will be sending you a separate mailing of your child’s bus stop/time. Please advise students to ride the bus of their assigned route number, not by a color. (Colors will be assigned by the school and may differ from last school year’s “color”.
School Visitation
The Francis T. Evans Elementary School staff encourages parents/guardians to visit the building. If you have any questions, it is recommended that you call the school and ask to have your child’s teacher contact you. The school office is open each day from 7:15 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. When calling to speak with your child’s teacher please keep in mind that the teacher cannot come to the phone during instructional time. A message will be taken and the teacher will return your call as soon as possible.

Our school has the services of a full time nurse. Be reminded, please do not send to school children who are sick.
