FIRST Leadership Position - Teachers
Teacher leadership is central to improving teaching and learning in Prince George’s County Public Schools. FIRST recognizes teachers who extend their expertise, knowledge and skills to support improvement efforts with colleagues, both within their schools and across the county. Following is a description of the procedures related to teacher leadership within FIRST.
I. Notification of Leadership Opportunities
By September 15th, the principal of each participating school will publish a list of available leadership positions within the school and across the school system. Leadership positions are intended to be projects that assist in achieving improved student achievement. For possible activities, please see Leadership Opportunities Document. Central offices that have leadership positions to be filled by FIRST teachers will notify participating principals of positions by September 1st.
II. Leadership Application
All teachers in the FIRST program who wish to earn the stipend related to teacher leadership will complete the Leadership Application prior to October 1st indicating their first three choices for positions they wish to pursue. If the teacher feels that there is an unmet leadership need at their school, they may independently identify and describe the nature of the work they will undertake.
The Principal will determine on the basis of building needs the best distribution of these duties among applicants. Notification of positions will be made by the principal by October 15th.
A teacher may elect to decline a leadership opportunity as presented by the Principal. In the event that a Principal is unable to grant a teacher any of their preferred three leadership positions, the teacher may request another Leadership Position from the available list.
III. Leadership Portfolio
Documentation of the Leadership Position is intended to provide appropriate evidence of the efforts made in pursuit of the goal without creating undue burden and bureaucracy. This work product should be generated in the course of the leadership position for the purpose of the position, not solely for documentation.
The Leadership Portfolio is due to the school Principal by May 15th.
Work product: Teachers must include actual work product including, but not limited to,
