We use the Calvert Curriculum which is build on a foundation of reading, writing, and arithmetic. This is layered with history, science, music, geography and the arts to ensure no gaps in instruction. It is aligned with the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum.
The kindergarten has a strong phonics approach to reading which emphasizes short vowels and consonants, sounds sequencing, and auditory and visual discrimination. The reading materials are integrated with Science and Social Studies, ensuring no gaps in instruction. Math studies bring an understanding of basic addition and subtraction.
The formal reading begins in first grade with developing decoding and comprehension skills. Spelling also begins at this grade level with lists correlated to the phonics instruction in the reading program. In the third grade a Critical Thinking Workbook is added to help build strong comprehension skills.
Grade four begins the use of classic children's literature with lessons designed to increase the children's skills in comprehension, appreciation, and analysis. Also, in fourth grade A Child's History of the World is introduced.
In fifth grade the students begin the study of American History and Geography which is enhanced by classic literature reading selections. The student's skills in essential writing tasks, including paragraphing, outlining, and summarizing will be developed as he or she writes reports or original stories and essays.
The sixth graders will study the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and Langston Hughes while reading classic literature. Grammar skills will be strengthened by learning to diagram sentences.
In Math, the students begin with the basic addition and subtraction and solving simple word problems. In third grade the students begin the multiplication and division skills which will take them into the introduction of geometry in the fourth grade. Fifth grade math covers multiplication up to three digits, geometry, multiplying and division of fractions, and introduces integers. Sixth grade math skills are enhanced through the study of fractions, decimals, and one and two step equations.
The Science program begins with the study of seasons, weather, and properties of matter in kindergarten. As they progress through the grades they study living things, electricity, and magnetism. They also study plans, weather, climate, and ecosystems.
