ESOL Teacher's Instruction Activities

The ESOL Teacher, Classroom Teacher and Reading Specialist

  • Plan collaboratively on a regular basis (following R/ELA Curriculum Framework guidelines), and make decisions together on objectives, activities,  materials, time, space, classroom management, etc.
  • Determine groupings of ELLs based on students’ assessed reading levels, taking into consideration their ESOL proficiency (ESOL 1, 2, 3), and previous education/literacy in native language.

The Classroom Teacher

  • Provides whole class instruction and differentiated access to the selected reading program materials to ELLs as outlined in the Reading/English Language Arts Curriculum Framework Progress Guide (CFPG).
  • Provides small group instruction for ELLs as outlined in the CFPG.  Students are grouped according to their reading level and texts are chosen to match their reading level.
    • ELLs who are reading one year below grade level use the HM Leveled Readers, Language Support Edition as the reading text or another text that is appropriate for the students’ reading and English language proficiency level.   Sample lesson plans are shown in the CFPG.
    • ELLs who are reading more than one year below grade level use easier texts matched to their reading ability.  The Focus for Small Group Instruction in the R/ELA CFPG provides guidelines for creating lessons and sample lesson plans.  The CFPG also provides listings of leveled books in the Resources section.  The Emergent Readers Lesson Plan is used with text below DRA level 16, and the Extending Readers Lesson Plan is used for text above DRA level 16.
    • Options for differentiated small group instruction include:
      • Homogeneous small group:  Students grouped by reading level.
      • Flexible small group:  Students grouped by need for extra support on a specific skill.
      • Heterogeneous small group:  Groups purposefully contain students of a variety of reading levels.
      • Reader’s Workshop:  Students are individually practicing the strategy or skill with text at their individual independent reading level, while teacher circulates and supports.
      • Writer’s Workshop: Students are individually working through the writing process.  The same steps as Reader’s Workshop apply: brief focused lesson, individual work, teacher conferences, and whole class sharing.
      • Combination of formats: Teacher may pull a small group for part of the time, while other students are working individually to apply the skill or strategy.

The ESOL Teacher

  • Provides varied support to ELLs based on the students’ individual language needs.  Instructional models include pull-out, a combination of pull-out/plug-in, and co-teaching.

English Language Instruction (Pull-out)

  • The ESOL Teacher meets with ELLs daily in the ESOL classroom to provide instruction in the acquisition of the four English language skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.  The primary objective of ESOL instruction is to assist students in learning the academic vocabulary and grammatical structures of English they need in order to have access to grade-level academic content, interact in their school environment, and understand their teacher’s instruction.
  • Materials for these classes are designed for English language learners, and include the Language-based Instructional Supplement for Teaching Reading Comprehension Strategies and Skills to English Language Learners Across the Content Areas, Harcourt Moving Into English, Houghton Mifflin, and other supplemental materials.
  • Students are grouped according to grade level and/or levels of English proficiency (oral, listening, reading and writing) as determined by scores on the English language proficiency testing instrument used for initial placement and given annually to assess progress.
