Child Growth & Development 1 (1 credit, single mod)
This year long college-preparatory program focuses on the development of the preschool child. A major component is the operation of an on-campus preschool for community children. Student portfolios reflect the ability to plan and prepare lesson plans. Open to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.


Child Growth & Development 2 (2 credits, double mod)
This yearlong double period college-preparatory program focuses on the development of the school-aged child. Students serve an internship three mornings per week. Internship locations include local elementary schools, day care centers, and facilities for the deaf or handicapped. Student portfolios reflect the ability to prepare instructional materials. An emphasis is placed on preparation for college and careers. Students may earn three articulated college credits in Early Childhood Education and the 90-Clock Hour Certificate. Open to 11th and 12th graders.

Child Growth and Development 1- Completed, C or better and approval of Instructor


Child Growth & Development 3 (2 credits or 3 credits option)
Students may select a two or three credit option for this yearlong college-preparatory program. The course includes units on early childhood education, day care management, special needs children, and college/career preparation. Students work in paid or volunteer positions related to young children and/or children with special needs. Students may earn three articulated college credits in Early Childhood Education and documentation of hours for Senior Staff Certification. Open to 12th graders.

Students may enroll in Child Growth and Development 2 and 3 concurrently.


Fashion Design/Fashion In Your Future (1 credit, double mod) *
This course is designed for students interested in clothing construction, fashion, and/or careers in fashion. Students study the elements of design, wardrobe planning, and develop clothing construction skills. Possible student projects include jewelry, shoe, and cosmetic bags, handbags, and a variety of garments. Student portfolios will include a resume, designs, a fashion newspaper article, and a wardrobe book. Students create a hobby project related to fashion and present a display of fashion items. Fabrics and supplies for personal projects are the responsibility of the student. Open to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders or by approval of instructor.


Advanced Fashion Design (1 credit, double mod) *
This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Fashion Design/Fashion In Your Future and who wish to continue developing skills related to clothing. Projects will include pattern design, garment construction, and tailoring techniques. An internship in the field of fashion is an option. Fabrics and materials for personal projects are the responsibility of the student. Open to 11th and 12th graders.

Fashion Design/Fashion In Your Future – Completed, B or better and approval of Instructor.


Foods & Nut./Food Trends &Technology 1 (1 credit, double mod) +
The focus of this course is the interrelationship of food, health, science, and nutrition. This course includes basic skills of food preparation. Emphasis is placed on how new technology and scientific findings impact nutrition, biotechnology, food processing and human diets. Students use the scientific approach to analyze specific foods and their properties. Computer programs are used to evaluate diets and research current topics in nutrition. Open to students in all grades.


Foods & Nut./Food Trends & Technology 2 (1 credit, double mod) +
These two semester courses are designed for students who have successfully completed Foods and Nutrition/Food Trends and Technology 1 and/or International Culture and Cuisine and have an interest in further study in the field of Food and Nutrition or the Culinary Arts/Food Service careers. The two courses place an emphasis on food safety and sanitation and allow students the opportunity to become Certified Food Handlers by taking the National SERVSAFE certification exam. Students explore special dietary needs as related to nutrition and meal planning and engage in laboratory experiences appropriate for employment in the field of food and nutrition. A one-credit internship may be offered as an option to allow students the opportunity to make practical application of their knowledge from the courses. This class will be offered as a double mod, semester class.

International Culture & Cuisine (1 credit, double mod) *
Food, as it relates to the culture of other countries, is the focus of this course. The following concepts will be stressed: the relationship of the food contributions of other countries to American cuisine, the relationship of a country’s food to its culture, and the application of international cooking techniques. Open to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.

Interior Design (1 credit, single mod) * or +
This yearlong course focuses on the Prince George’s County student-built showcase house. Students learn about housing, the elements and principles of design, blueprints, and floor plans as they compete in different aspects of the project. During the second semester, students create their own designs, learn different techniques used in decorating, create a model room, and showcase a hobby that can be used in decorating a house. Skills learned in this course relate to a variety of careers in the interior design field. Open to students in grades 10, 11, and 12 or by permission of instructor.
