Kindergarten Program

Overview

The Maryland State Department of Education requires that all children who will be five years old by September 1 of the year they are requesting entry must register for enrollment in Kindergarten.

Immaturity Waivers
Parents or guardians who feel that their children are not mature enough to begin school may request in writing a waiver of one year for this regulation.

Letters are addressed to: Superintendent of Schools and sent to the Office of Pupil Accounting and School Boundaries at 14201 School Lane, Upper Marlboro, Maryland  20772.

Please include in your request the child’s name, date of birth, parent/guardian’s name, address, and phone number. A written response will be made to your request.

Program Components
Kindergarten forms the basis for the development of the critical academic, intellectual, social, and emotional experiences and learning foundations that will guide and inform students throughout the duration of their school careers.

The experiences are planned using the Voluntary State Curriculum for Kindergarten and include reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science, and health. Presently the system uses the following tools to assist in the delivery of instruction:

  • Houghton Mifflin Reading - A Legacy of Literacy
  • Scott Foresman - Addison Wesley Mathematics
  • Scott Foresman Social Studies - Here We Go
  • Scott Foresman Science
  • Harcourt  Health and Fitness
