VISION STATEMENT The vision of the Frederick Douglass High School advisory program is to guide each student to developing a strong sense of self worth, pride, and success while personalizing the learning environment and meeting their individual needs. MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Frederick Douglass High School advisory program is to create smaller learning communities that meet bi-monthly in which a core group of adults conduct an advisory and mentoring program, relating to school and personal issues, in order to ensure each student is known well by at least one adult in the building GOALS OF ADVISORY Foster effective communication skills Develop a strong bond with and feel a sense of support from the advising adult and peers and giving the student a “home-base” Promote positive student- adult relationships [with those who have a vested interest in a child] Provide a school environment supportive of academic challenges and student performance Create a student-centered environment Provide strategies for the prevention of at-risk behaviors and for the pro-activity of positive behaviors Foster an on-going rapport with students Help students gain an understanding of alternative avenues Promote the recognition and appreciation of diversity among adults and students Encouraging the advisor by applauding school efforts to know and value young people as individuals Create meaningful activities suitable for specific grade levels, talents, and interests
