Teacher at WorkCrossland High School is a comprehensive high school dedicated to preparing students to be productive citizens in the 21st century. The school consists of a traditional program and a Technical Academy, designed to provide students with marketable skills in the areas of cosmetology, drafting, welding, nursing, horticulture, masonry, air conditioning/refrigeration, printing and culinary arts.

The school's operates under three Basic Beliefs. These beliefs are, "Respect for the Individual", "The Best Possible Service to the Community", and "The Pursuit of Excellence". All initiatives are written with this in mind. We strive to motivate our students to achieve academic excellence, and we celebrate their excellence publicly and proudly. Crossland's staff is made up of 119 professionals. The non-classroom based professionals include the principal, six assistant principals, 6 guidance counselors, a media specialist and a reading specialist. Major Initiatives
and How These Efforts Will
Improve Student Performance

Student doing workThe priority needs identified for Crossland High School continue to be improvement in the number of students reading at or above grade level and improvement in basic mathematical skills. This need is based on the scores reported by previous MSA results and analysis of quarterly grade distributions and student work samples. Throughout the 2005-2006 we focused on improving the school climate and culture of the building in order to foster a safe and orderly environment. We will continue to enforce a strict discipline policy, a clear attendance policy for students and teachers, bi-weekly progress reports for all students, data driven scheduling, emphasis on writing in every class, and technology driven math instruction. Daily and long-range planning will show evidence of the use of Prince George?s County curriculum frameworks, Standards of Excellence, the Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC) and other appropriate curriculum documents.

The key to our success is for us to continue to have effective instruction in every class, every day. Communication has proven to be one of our greatest assets, therefore, we will continue to make communication with students, parents and staff a priority. We will continue to make all school policies and procedures clear to staff and students. The quarterly assemblies both motivated and rejuvenated faculty and students, therefore they will continue. Our Instructional Council met weekly and was able to address many issues within our school community; this body will continue to meet. The Instructional Council is made up of Department Chairs, Teacher Coordinators, Parents and Administration. Disciple will still be handled by only 1 administrator allowing the others to focus on instruction through monitoring and counseling students.

Special Education

In previous years staffing has been an issue for the Special Education Department. This year we are staffed with 10 teachers, the most we've had in the past 2 years. We believe with the proper training, additional support and the appropriate accountability measures in place the instructional needs of this subgroup can be met. Strategies will include flexible grouping, guided reading, independent reading, journal writing, and reciprocal teaching. Teachers will plan collaboratively using both the Prince George's County Curriculum Frameworks and the Standards of Excellence. Co-teaching and co-planning will further support the school-wide initiatives of policies/procedures and data collection and analysis. Special Education accommodations will include: additional time on task, verbatim reading, flexible grouping and peer tutoring. Teachers will use differentiated instruction and hands on learning for specials needs students.

Safe and Orderly Environment

Discipline will be handled by one administrator. This Administrator will be housed in the discipline office and will deal with infractions that can not be handled by the Department Chairpersons/Teacher Coordinators.

Parent Involvement

Parents are part of our Instructional Council. Parents are also invited to quarterly assemblies, honor roll assemblies and back to school night. PTA meetings include time for parent-student interactions as well as time for expressed concerns and the dissemination of information to the Instructional Council. Teachers and parents also interact via bi-weekly progress reports that inform parents of a student's academic progress in each class and attendance data. The Principal also is available to conference with parents on a daily basis.
