     WRESTLING CHAMPION GOING DIVISION ONE

     Keevon Prather

Keevon Prather is an outstanding "scholar athlete" and lets put an emphasis on scholar. He is the number one wrestler in Prince Georges County, plays football, takes advanced placement classes and still finds a way to maintain a 3.0 (or better) grade point average. It's no surprise that several Universities are interested in Keevon. According to Coach Phillips - "Merrimac College, Virginia Union University, Missouri University of Science and Technology, North Carolina A&T, University of New Hampshire, University of New Haven and the University of Delaware are just a few of Keevon's choices. Coach Phillips also said "I think Keevon is going to choose the University of Delaware because they already have a jersey with his name on it." With support from his family and several applauding teammates and classmates, Keevon signed his letter of intent for the University of Delaware on February 1st. • Cameras roll for Crossland High students in first broadcast production

New TV studio designed to teach lessons beyond the classroom

morrellbyrdAlthough Crossland High School 11th-grader Faithful Byrd has been reading the morning announcements for two years over the school’s intercom, she said she was both nervous and excited Tuesday morning.

The extra anticipation was because she was taking part in the inaugural television broadcast of the Temple Hills school’s daily announcements at its new television production studio.

“It was nerve-racking,” said Faithful, 17, of Suitland. “It was a new experience, so I was excited.”

The new studio is the brainchild of assistant principal Terence Taylor, who also teaches the associated broadcast media production course. Taylor, who in 2008 completed the construction of a similar facility at Central High School in Capitol Heights, said he had been lobbying for the studio since he joined Crossland High in 2009. A Public School Leader’s Lesson in Creating a Culture of Excellence

Lindsey Burke January 3, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Heritage logoWe’re all used to hearing about the public school that is underperforming. But there are, without question, pockets of excellence throughout the country. Prince Georges County, Maryland, has one such pocket in Crossland High School—a public school with a passionate and respected principal at the helm.

But it wasn’t always so. Less than a decade ago, Crossland was unsafe, underperforming, and shunned by the surrounding community. Parental involvement was low, and parents were even hostile toward school administrators and teachers. ( for more info click here)

Last year the United States Department of Education asked the American Institutes of Research to put together an audio-video package of how Crossland helps students navigate the path to college. That package is now live on the USDE web-site "Doing What Works". Crossland is now being used as a model for the rest of the nation by the USDE on preparing kids for college. (Caption by Principal Thomas 6/15/11)

Principal Thomas talks about the school's focus on academics. All students are expected to take challenging courses and go to college. We have had to convince our teachers that we have to teach our children how to be honors students. We have to teach them how to be AP [advanced placement] students. We have to teach them how to be IB [international baccalaureate] students. They haven’t had those experiences in the past - Click to see video

Ms. Harmon,  counseling department chair talks about the high school's process for scheduling students in the right academic classes to prepare them for college. When the students enter in ninth grade, the counselor is responsible to go to the eighth grade before they even come through the door and have articulation meetings with the parents and the teachers and the students. We do evening visitations, and then we go back and register the students. Click to see video
