School Summary

 

Cool Spring is a community of life long learners that envisions an excellent academic education for all students by providing rigorous instruction through the implementation of the County’s Curriculum Framework Progress Guides, incorporating technology and providing community outreach opportunities.  Because of these goals Cool Spring offers a strong MSA preparation Program that is implemented from January – March.  The curriculum consist of theme test, Finishline and on-line MSA prep questions.  The program is taught two to four times a week for approximately one hour daily.  In addition, an MSA Parent night is scheduled to provide information to parents regarding MSA and activities implemented to boost self-concept of students during the preparation period.

 

There is a total instructional staff of 51 people including classroom teachers, specialists, paraprofessionals and administrators.  Staff development activities are made available to the staff and they include but are not limited to:

  • Training in differentiated instruction
  • EduSoft training
  • Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Additional focus areas for staff development includes

  • Strategies for meeting the needs of identified special education students
  • Language acquisition strategies in working with students in ESOL
  • Higher order thinking skills.

 

Additional services provided at Cool Spring for students and staff include:

  • Extended Day Learning Programs to give students support in reading and mathematics.
  • The Guidance Counselor incorporates lessons from a Violence Prevention program into daily instruction throughout the year.
  • The nutritional program, “Breakfast in the Classroom”, which provides all students with a balanced breakfast each morning.
  • Partners In Print
  • PJs and Books
  • A Job-Alike mentor teacher will be assigned to all first and second years teachers.
  • Participation in the Prince George’s County Television Science Bowl Competition
  • A school wide Science Fair.
