Nearly nine of every 10 classes in schools with large numbers of students highly impacted by the challenges of poverty are now taught by “Highly Qualified” teachers in the core academic subject areas according to data released today by Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS).
Additionally, nearly three quarters of all core subject area classes in Prince George’s County public schools are taught by teachers who have met Maryland’s “highly qualified” requirements in accordance with the federal No Child Left Behind law.
“All children have the right to be taught by highly qualified and highly effective teachers,” said PGCPS Superintendent Dr. John E. Deasy. “Children faced with the challenges of poverty are in particular need of high-level instruction, and we are committed to recruiting and developing the best teachers to work in our most impacted schools.”
