News Release: CAREER ACADEMY PROGRAM APPLICATION NOW AVAILABLE

UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Grade-eligible high school students are now able to apply for enrollment into the Career Academy Program. The Academy provides students with technical skills and knowledge that add great value to their academic education. Programs of study have strong collaborative relationships with area businesses, industry leaders, and post-secondary education opportunities.

Programs of study consist of multi-year sequences of course work, career guidance, and work-based learning experiences that enable students to make more informed college and career choices. They also afford students an opportunity to earn college credit, industry certification/licenses, or pre-apprenticeship experience prior to leaving high school.

There are four general qualifications for the Career Academy Program.

  1. Students cannot transfer into the Career Academy Programs; an approved application is required.
  2. The student must, at the time of entering the program, be enrolled in a Prince George’s County public school, have a class status of junior (11th) grade, and have at least a 2.0 GPA.
  3. The student and parent/legal guardian must sign the “Career Academy Student/Parent/Guardian Agreement” upon acceptance into the program.
  4. The student must be eligible to complete the Career Academy Program and meet all high school graduation requirements.


For admission into Health Professions, Cosmetology, Barbering, and CISCO Academies there are additional enrollment requirements:

  1. Health Professions - Students enrolling in this two-year specialization must have successfully completed biology with a minimum grade of “C,” and must take the industry certification exam associated with the health profession area prior to graduation.
  2. Cosmetology - Students enrolling in this two-year specialization must: have successfully completed biology with a minimum grade of “C,” and must take the Maryland State Board of Cosmetologists Certification exam prior to graduation in order to complete the program.
  3. Barbering - Students enrolling in this specialization must: have successfully completed biology with a minimum grade of “C,” and must take the Maryland State Board of Barbers Certification exam prior to graduation in order to complete the program.
  4. CISCO Academy - Students enrolling in this specialization must have successfully completed a combination of Algebra I and Geometry or Algebra I and Algebra II with a minimum grade of “C” in each course.

 

Students who apply for admission into a Career Academy will receive a letter by mail regarding their program application status by May 1, 2015.
