UPPER MARLBORO, MD — Five Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) physical education teachers were recently recognized by the Maryland Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD).

“Congratulations to these physical education teachers who have shown great leadership in their schools and community,” said Dr. Alvin L. Crawley, Interim Superintendent of Schools. “Physical education is very important in our schools and plays a vital role in the growth and development of students."

Christine Gilliard-Arthur, physical education teacher at Gladys Noon Spellman Elementary School, is the recipient of the MAHPERD 2011-2012 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award.

“I am humbled and honored to be named for this award”, said Gilliard-Arthur. “Nothing is more important than the health and wellness of our children.”

Gilliard-Arthur, who believes that healthy, active students make better learners, was selected for her model of lifetime physical activity and the wellness opportunities she has developed at her school.

Johnathan Jones from Whitehall Elementary School, Greg Guisewite from Beltsville Academy, Michael Alexander from Parkdale High School and Kathy Lacey from Kettering Elementary School all were recipients of the Simon McNeely Honor Award. This award honors physical education teachers for their exemplary leadership in school health and physical education.

MAHPERD’s vision is to enhance and promote the health and wellness of all the citizens of Maryland. It provides advocacy and professional development opportunities designed to advance and unify the professions of health education, physical education, recreation and dance.
