UPPER MARLBORO, MD—Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) principals will gather this week for the annual Summer Leadership Institute, a two-day training session on the latest instructional strategies and school system initiatives.

The theme, “Leading Through Change,” reflects the importance of leadership during challenges and advances in education. The institute will be held Aug. 1-2 at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville.

"The Summer Leadership Institute is designed to enhance understanding of strategies for improving teaching and learning,” said Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent of Schools. "Principals must be ever-mindful of our charge to accelerate academic progress, produce college- and career-ready graduates, and elevate the school system’s standing as a leader in student achievement."

This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Milton Chen, senior fellow at the George Lucas Educational Foundation, a nonprofit that utilizes its multimedia website (Edutopia.org) and documentary films to communicate a new vision for 21st century schools.

Dr. Hite will give opening remarks and Board of Education Chair Verjeana M. Jacobs, Esq., will share greetings as the Institute kicks off on Wednesday. Key areas of discussion and professional growth for this year's institute include the National Common Core Curriculum, Framework for Teaching, and the teacher evaluation process.
