Days before nearly 9,000 educators descend on Washington, D.C. for the National Education Association (NEA)
Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly, June 25-July 5, hundreds will kick-off their annual gathering by giving a local school a deserving makeover.

Future, current, and retired teachers, higher-ed faculty and education support professionals will paint, clean, make repairs and landscape Thomas Johnson Middle School on Wednesday, June 27 as part ofOutreach to Teach. Over 400 educators are expected to travel from around the country – some as far away as Hawaii – to help refurbish the Lanham, Md. school. Volunteers will redo the school’s landscaping, completely remodel the teachers’ lounge with new flooring and furniture, paint murals throughout the school and even build a new studio for the TV morning announcements.

Sponsored byNEA’s Student Program, each year Outreach to Teach selects a public school in the metropolitan area of the host city of NEA’s Annual Meeting to receive a free makeover.  In previous years, Outreach to Teach volunteers havereplaced countertops and cabinet doors, assembled furniture, installed gardens and planted flowers, plants and trees on the campuses of recipient schools.

About NEA: The National Education Association is the nation's largest professional employee organization, representing more than 3 million elementary and secondary teachers, higher education faculty, education support professionals, school administrators, retired educators and students preparing to become teachers.
