Baden Elementary Recognizes Former Principal

UPPER MARLBORO, MD -- In honor of his significant contributions, Baden Elementary School hosted a special dedication ceremony Thursday to name the main concourse after former principal Dr. Jerry F. Keeney. A memorial plaque was unveiled to be put on permanent display alongside paintings donated by the Keeney family of the original Baden Elementary building and the one currently in use.

“Dr. Keeney served Prince George’s County Public Schools for nearly 20 years as a dedicated teacher, principal and administrator,” said Verjeana M. Jacobs, Esq., Board of Education Chair. “Naming the concourse after Dr. Keeney is a permanent way to honor his contributions to the history of excellence at Baden Elementary School.”

Students, parents, staff and special guests came together for the ceremony, including and his daughter, Nancy Keeney Smith, Board of Education Member Donna Hathaway Beck, Del. James E. Proctor, Jr., instructional director Maria Smith, principal Danielle Goddard and retired superintendent Dr. Edward Feeney, who served from 1976 to 1984.

Proctor presented Keeney’s family with a state proclamation and a Maryland flag that was flown in his honor over the Maryland State House in Annapolis. The Baden Elementary choir performed musical selections.

“Many of our schools have named areas of their campus after former employees,” said
Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent of Schools. “It’s one of the many ways we can commemorate significant contributions of individuals to their school community.”

Dr. Keeney served as principal of Baden from 1965 to 1973, and was a teacher at District Heights Elementary School from 1956 to 1965. When he left District Heights, students, parents and staff planted a tree in his honor and as a tribute to his love of science and meteorology.

“Jerry loved this community and this school and today’s celebration was a wonderful tribute to all he accomplished during his time here at Baden,” said Dr. Feeney.
