LAUREL, MD – Graduating seniors in the Nursing/Medical Careers Technical Academy at Laurel High School are leaving with more than a diploma. The entire class earned certification as geriatric nursing assistants (GNA) from the Maryland Board of Nursing.

This certification is required for nursing assistants to work in a licensed comprehensive care facility. The students underwent a written and clinical testing process that tested for core competencies and additional skill sets required by the state.

“Our technical academy is a hidden jewel that provides incredible insight and opportunity in the field of nursing,” said instructor Alice Belton, RN.

The students who earned the GNA license are Monica Akateh, Kendall-Rae Baptiste-Poinsette, Tiffany Barber-Alexander, Timothy Blake, Christopher Dinarte, Rachel Gilbertz, Brooke Gray, Mahjabeen Hussain, Sara Jane Iral, Chimezie Ndukuba, Paola Portillo, Yvette Zelaya and Sjori Thompson.

The Nursing/Medical Career Technical Academy is also offered at Bladensburg, Crossland and Suitland high schools.
