UPPER MARLBORO, MD -- Chesapeake Math & Information Technology (CMIT) Academy, a Prince George’s County Public Schools public charter school, was recently awarded a $15,000 grant through the County Executive’s 2012-2013 Community Partnership Grant Program. The program is designed to assist non-profit organizations in fulfilling their mission and building their capacity to serve county residents.

The CMIT Academy Fundraising Parent Task Force has been working to raise funds for a school bus to help transport students. So far, parents have raised nearly $16,000 towards this goal. With the additional monies from the grant award, the school expects to purchase a used school bus in the near future.

“Our goal at CMIT Academy is to provide students with a rigorous academic program focused on the STEM areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said principal Ali Gurbuz. “This grant will help provide cost-effective transportation for students to access the many enriching STEM opportunities in our region.”

CMIT Academy is modeled after Chesapeake Science Point Public Charter School in Anne Arundel County, which was named “Charter School of the Year” in 2010 by the Maryland Charter School Network. Located in Laurel, CMIT Academy opened its doors in August 2011 to 150 sixth- and seventh-graders. The school plans to add one grade level and approximately 100 students each year until it reaches full capacity at 700 students in grades 6-12.
