Martin L. King, Jr. MS and University Park ES Win PGCPS Science Bowl Competition

UPPER MARLBORO, MD—Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) hosted its 26th Science Bowl championships for Middle Schools on March 27 and Elementary Schools on April 17 at the school system’s TV96/38 studios at the Bonnie F. Johns Educational Media Center in Landover. Martin L. King, Jr. Middle School and University Park Elementary School rose in the competition as champions.

“Congratulations to all the elementary and middle schools who competed in this year’s competition,” said Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent of Schools. “The Science Bowl is a great competition that showcases our students and their vast knowledge of science.”
 

The winning Martin L. King, Jr. team, coached by Elizabeth Butler, included Liam Greaves, Zachary Landau, Zak Reed, and alternates Ann Therese Greaves, Aaron McGlovin, and Kyle Tuliao. Martin Luther King, Jr. defeated Stephen Decatur to take its first title since 2005.  

The winning University Park team, coached by Geoff Favero, included Charlie Dawson, Madeleine Wonneberger, Surya Pukazhenthi, and alternates Louis Catacalos, Vivian Tran, and Alexis Arnason. University Park Elementary School defeated Cora Rice ES to win its 5th title. University Park has now won more Science Bowl elementary championships than any other school in the history of the competition.

The Science Bowl is the Prince George's County interscholastic science literacy competition that test student knowledge in six categories: Green Things, Zoo Parade, Body Systems, Let’s Get Physical, Science Potpourri, and Dateline Science. The Science Bowl started in 1986 as a way to give elementary and middle school students a chance to demonstrate their science knowledge in an academic competition. The annual competition features questions that require students to connect science in the classroom to current events and popular culture.
