Montpelier and Valley View elementary schools along with Walker Mill Middle School will receive 2012 Maryland Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) School Awards.

The award recognizes programs that offer superior and equitable gifted and talented education. The rigorous application process required school teams to document the ways that the school’s program is aligned with state criteria for excellence. The Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education reviewed the applications.

Last year, Kenmoor Middle School was in the inaugural class of EGATE recipients. Accokeek Academy will be recognized as an “EGATE Participant” for submitting an application.

"Our commitment to gifted and talented education in Prince George’s County Public Schools is evident in the programs at Montpelier, Valley View and Walker Mill,” said Dr. William R. Hite Jr., Superintendent of Schools. “We are proud to continue the legacy of excellence for many of our best and brightest students.”

A total of seven schools from across the state will be recognized at a ceremony on Feb. 29 at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel. The schools will receive citations from Gov. Martin O’Malley and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE); display the EGATE school banner and plaque; serve as models and resources to other schools planning to achieve similar designation; and will be featured on the MSDE website.
