HYATTSVILLE – Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 400 PG presented a $1,500 donation Monday to the family of Omari Noel, a student at Lewisdale Elementary School who died last month in a fire.
“On behalf of SEIU, Local 400 made a decision to donate $1,500 to the family of Omari Noel as a donation from all of the members of Local 400," said Carnell Reid, the union's president. “The tragic loss of Omari Noel moved us and our school community greatly. We wanted to let the family know that we are there for them and that we will work through this together.”
Noel's mother, Simone Anne Munroe, and great-aunt, Janet Assing-Macklin, also died on Nov. 27 in the early-morning fire at their Lewisdale home. Both women were hospitalized in critical condition and died the next day from smoke inhalation.
Noel’s grandmother, Merle Munroe, 62, escaped the home without injury. Fire investigators determined the blaze was caused by an overloaded power strip in the living room.
Donations may be sent to Munroe Family Memorial Fund, Bank of America, 7370 Baltimore Ave., College Park, MD 20740.
