UPPER MARLBORO, MD – The final tally shows that the inaugural Golfing for Education Tournament hosted by the Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) Education Foundation raised nearly $65,000.

“I am very proud of staff, tournament partners, and volunteers who worked together to make this event a success,” said Dr. William R. Hite, Jr., Superintendent of Schools. “The funds raised through these efforts will be used to fund scholarships and educational programs that directly benefit the students of Prince George’s County.”

Held in June at the Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville, the tournament’s success resulted from an outpouring of community support and generous donations of time and resources by volunteers and business partners. Approximately 72 golfers representing 18 teams played in the tournament. With a $10,000 donation, Pepco was the top sponsor for the event. Thomas H. Graham, PEPCO Region president, and Glenn Mahone, vice president of communications for Aerojet/Gen Corp., served as honorary co-chairs.

Other donors included:
Silver Sponsors ($6,000) – Eastern Food Services and Prince George’s Community College (PGCC)
Corporate Sponsors ($3,000) – Aerojet, Discovery Education, Johnson Controls, Educational Systems Federal Credit Union, Howard University Beltsville Research Campus, the Foundation of Applied Technologies for Students (FACTS), Sodexo Education, G.S. Proctor & Associates, Inc., and Thatcher Law Firm.

Seven additional businesses contributed between $1,000 and $2,000, and approximately 35 business or community partners were sponsors or donors.

Planning is currently underway for next year’s Golfing for Education Tournament, scheduled for June 27 at the same location. For more information or to register as a sponsor, contact the PGCPS Office of Business and Community Partnerships at 301-952-6095.
