THE FRENCH IMMERSION PROGRAM AT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL  

French Immersion is a process that assimilates the historical, social, cultural, political perspectives of the francophone world, by which students learn and work in the medium of the French language in order to acquire 21st century skills. 

OUR GOAL  

The primary goal of the French Immersion program at CHS is to ensure that students: Are prepared to enter programs of higher education and a competitive work force driven  by global forces which shape the 21st century Communicate in the French language Gain knowledge, understanding and appreciation of francophone literature and cultures Connect with other disciplines, acquire information and be capable of doing valid research Develop insight into the nature of language and culture Participate in multicultural communities at home and around the world 

OUR FOCUS:  

The focus of the French Immersion program includes communication, problem solving and critical thinking, analysis and synthesis. Communication strategies, both oral and written, are taught in student centered classrooms. Concepts from other content areas are incorporated. Access to a variety of creative technological tools such as the internet, podcasts, video-conferencing with schools in France, blogs, wikis etc. allow for an enhanced cultural experience as well as context for interaction with native French speakers from around the world. Collaboration and innovation based on the National Standards for World Languages of Connections, Cultures, Communication, Comparisons and Communities form the guidelines for our curriculum. 

ENRICHMENT:   

Local and international field trips are organized so students may gain exposure to diverse cultures and expand their horizons. Eligible French immersion students can also register into the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at CHS which is part of a world wide affiliation of schools that promotes international standards of achievement. Advanced Placement French (AP) courses are also offered as is the study of Japanese and Spanish. 

OUR MISSION: 

Our program’s mission is that all students will acquire knowledge and 21st century skills through spoken, written and technological communication in the French language which will enable and empower them to become productive, global citizens and life long learners. This will be accomplished through an environment which is both motivating and challenging for all students. Parental and community involvement will be both cultivated and encouraged.
