and having fun with fractions!

 General Informational Sites (back)

• Teachers interested in rational numbers and decimals might spend more than a small fraction of their planning time in a visit The Math Forum to find a variety of resources and links to fractions related sites. The site also contains a math topic search engine.
   

• Is a question about fractions worrying you sick? Visit Dr. Math's site to find answers to all sorts of commonly asked questions.

• The Math League Multimedia site has quick explanations about how to add, subtract, multiply, divide, estimate and more with fractions. 

Sites with Lessons and Activities(back)

For a quick mini-lesson reviews of, and practice with, fractions, a visit to Visual Fractions allows you to do on-line activities in a extensive number and variety of fractions topics. For an explanation of the purpose of the site, see the information page. The table below will take you to specific activity areas.

The site also has a game called "Find Grampy" that involves naming fractions using a pictured number line as well as a harder version called "Find Grampy-Strict". Another game, "Cookies for Grampy", involves filling in a circle exacting by either clicking on pictures of the correct fraction, or typing it in. My fourth grade class doesn't cover multiplying and dividing fractions, but activities for these are also found at Visual Fractions.

• No Matter What Shape Your Fractions are In is the introductory page in a series of printable* fraction related mini-lessons and activities by Cynthia Lanius. This first page involves naming the fractions represented by assorted shape patterns. Also available at this site are:

• More Fun Fractions, which takes the introductory page a step further, with more pattern activities.
• Drawing Fun Fractions, that asks for drawn answers, rather than numbers.
• Designer Fractions, a multiple choice activity finding fractional parts of a colorful hexagon divided into 24 equal parts.
• Teacher's Notes on the lessons.

• Fun With Fractions provides a basic visual explanation of fractions, followed by a short multiple choice activity giving immediate feedback. Fractions-2 is a follow up page that involves simple adding of fractional parts, without requiring the reducing of fractions.

• S.O.S. Math provides a number of fractions related pages including: Reducing Fractions; Building Fractions, which asks students to do the reverse of reducing; Adding Fractions; and SubtractingFractions. These pages are more detailed, and less visual, in their explanations and examples, but the related activities provide immediate answers, with explanations, and might be a good stop for students ready for a greater challenge.

• Fresh Baked Fractions allows students to select difficulty levels in an activity requiring them to identify the equivalent fractions.

• The wide side of the arrow points to the bigger fraction. Remembering this rule when you do the Fraction Inequalities Flashcards on this website by A+ Math will serve you well.

• Knowing that you'll usually get two quarter for half a dollar in change will help you master the Reducing Fractions Flashcards you'll find here, at another A+ Math page.
