Make Paper Soup

PAPER HISTORY -Invented by the Chinese around 105 A.D. to replace silk pages. T'sai Lung, a court scribe, wanted to please his emperor and made the first "paper soup" from bark, rags and fish net. It was 500 years later when the recipe's secret was discovered and brought to the West.

PAPER MAKING -Today, un-recycled paper is made similarly with a soup of tree parts, water and chemicals which is blended together to look like oatmeal. Sometimes bleach is added to make it whiter, then starch is added to help glue the fibers together. This mixture, called a

"slurry", is sprayed onto screens where it is dried and wound on huge spools to make it ready for use by printers and publishers.

RECYCLED PAPER MAKING -Uses paper already made and can be done over and over again.
