VACCINATION CLINICS CANCELLED: Due to "unexpected delays" in production of the seasonal influenza vaccine the following Influenza Vaccination Clinics for PGCPS employees, retirees and their household members have been cancelled at Oxon Hill Staff Development Center (11/6), Bonnie F. Johns Media Center (11/9), and Sasscer Administration Building (11/13).

Biography

Born and raised in Brandywine, MD; a lifelong resident of Prince George’s County, Mr. Owen Johnson was elected in December of 2006 as Board Chair for the Prince George’s County Board of Education and to represent District 5.  

 Prior to his position on the Board, Mr. Johnson served as Supervisor of Interscholastic Athletic Programs, Dean of Academics and Student Affairs, Vice Principal, Athletic Director, Department Chairperson, Coach, and Physical Education Teacher for Prince George’s County Public Schools.  He is also retired from the United States Army National Guard with the rank of Sergeant Major.    During his career Mr. Johnson worked as a Joint Operations Center Specialist with Benchmark International Inc.

 Mr. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Maryland –Eastern Shore, Masters of Arts in Education and Curriculum Development from National Louis University and graduated from the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy.

Mr. Johnson served in the Peace Corps as a Program Coordinator under the direction of the Teachers Training Program.  This training took place in Venezuela, South America. 

 During his military career Mr. Johnson received several recognitions including, Commanding General’s Award for Achievement, Primary Leadership Development Honor Graduate, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal 4 Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal 4 Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Professional Development Ribbon Level 4, Army Service Ribbon, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

 Mr. Johnson continues to serve the community volunteering at Brandywine Recreation Association as a coach and an official, Brandywine Elementary, Gwynn Park Middle, Gwynn Park High School PTSA, and Baden Little League as coach and Umpire.  He also serves as coach and officiator for Marlboro and District Heights Boys and Girls Club.   

 Mr. Johnson is a member of the American Federation of School Administrators, Kappa Delta Phi, Maryland State Athletic Directors Association, American Legion, Life Member of National Interscholastic Athletic Administrator Association, National Federation of High School Sports, Enlisted Association of the National Guard of The United States, The United States Army Noncommissioned Officers Museum Association and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Life Member.

 His community membership includes Nottingham-Myers United Methodist Church where he holds the position of Church Council Chairperson.  Southern Maryland Democratic Club, Brandywine Accokeek Community Resource Alliance, Brandywine North Keys Civic Association, Upper Marlboro – Waldorf Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Prince George’s County Parent Teacher Student Association, University of Maryland, Eastern Shore Alumni Association, Advisory Board for TESST College and Advisory Board for Prince George’s County Retired Volunteer Program.

 Mr. Johnson was awarded the Prince George’s County Basketball Coach of the Year 1983.  Greater Washington Softball Umpire Association Umpire of the Year 1983.  International Association of Basketball Officials (IABO) Board #134, 2003 Contributor’s Award for Service to the Community.  Maryland State Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame, 2003 Inductee.

 Mr. Johnson is married to his wife of 33 years Mrs. Audrey Turner Johnson.
