Program Philosophy
:

The Visual Arts program is critical to education and learning.  The Visual Arts promote acquisition of and fluency in new ways of thinking, working, communicating, reasoning and investigating.  Art engages the learner in analysis, synthesis and evaluation.  Students develop techniques, approaches and habits for applying knowledge and skills in the visual arts to the world beyond school. The Visual Arts program provides experiences in studio processes, art history, aesthetics and criticism.  Critical observations, valid analysis and insightful interpretation are central to the learning process.  Gallery and museums visits are highly recommended in this program.  Infused into all aspects of the curriculum are elements of written and oral communications as well as career decision-making skills.  The Visual Arts program is developed to align with Maryland Essential Learner Outcomes; aesthetic education, historical, cultural and social content, creative expression and production, and aesthetic education, Skills for Success: Core Learning Goals, and to align with the National Visual Arts Standards.
