The Annapolis Road Academy Alternative High School provides opportunities for students who have documented behavior and/or attendance problems. Admission is on-going for expelled and adjudicated students and quarterly for students referred from their base school. The Alternative High School provides a highly structured educational environment to help students earn credits toward a high school diploma. Upon entering, each student will be given an academic assessment to identify skill levels in reading and mathematics. Those students who are below grade level will receive intensive remediation in those subjects while others will begin with instruction in courses needed for graduation. Recognizing the need for school and family to work together in the education of children, the school asks that parents agree to participate in monthly workshops in which they discuss and engage in parallel student activities. Annapolis Road Academy is designed to provide a transitional program for students in grades 9-12. The program affords students an opportunity to earn course credits through individualized instruction and includes an emphasis on behavior modification and goal development.
Alternative High School Student Profile:
Students who are enrolled in the school have either been expelled, adjudicated, or placed as disruptive students from their base schools.
The primary focus is on 9th and 10th grade repeating at-risk students who are identified by base schools for behavioral and/or attendance concerns, and are likely to earn a high school diploma based on successful intervention.
Students who would benefit from a short term, highly structured and supportive environment are the best candidate for this program. The program concepts of mandatory school uniform, PBIS positive reinforcement model, strict attendance guidelines, and small class sizes are primarily organized for positive student skill development for a two semester maximum enrollment.
Upon completion of the program, students will be referred to a long range appropriate instructional school or program best suited to the students’ needs, including community high school, vocational high school, Evening/Saturday High School, Community-Based Classroom, Summer School, GED Preparation, or other private schools or programs.
