UDL Provides Multiple Options for Minimizing Barriers

Happy boy in the classroom

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a way to guide instructional planning by applying brain based research to provide students and teachers with multiple options for learning:

  • for presenting the instructional material (eg. verbally, in writing, musically etc).
  • for students' actions and expressions of what they know.
  • for student engagement (interest and persistence) in the learning activity.
  • to overcome barriers to learning.
  • to maximize information retention.
  • for maintaining high achievement standards.
  • to realize the goal to enable all students to gain knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for learning.
