• News Release: PGCPS High Schools Renew Accreditation - UPDATED

    UPPER MARLBORO, MDThe Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools has renewed accreditation for all 26 high schools in Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS).

     

    Accreditation is the gold standard for measuring and evaluating school performance. The Commissions’ new district-wide process allowed all PGCPS high schools to receive accreditation in the same year. In the past, schools went through the accreditation process at different times.

     

    The new process will allow for greater internal consistency among high schools as it relates to school improvement efforts and the accreditation timeline. PGCPS had the highest number of schools go through the new districtwide accreditation process.

     

    “The Middle States accreditation process promotes a systemic approach to school improvement,” said Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, Chief Executive Officer. “Accreditation serves as independent validation of our good work and helps to guide our strategic planning, curriculum alignment and coalition-building.”

     

    Accreditation is a multifaceted voluntary evaluation process for schools and school systems to demonstrate research-based performance standards. The Middle States accreditation standards includes 12 factors: mission; governance and leadership; school improvement planning; finances; facilities; school organization and staff; health and safety; educational program; assessment and evidence of student learning; student services; student life and activities, and information resources.

     

    The accreditation process begins with a self-study requiring input from school leaders, teachers, parents and students. Following the self-study, a team of volunteer educators from Middle States member schools conducts an on-site peer review visit to observe school operations and interview various stakeholders.
